Potters Mills Update for Mid-September

State College, PA –  The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is issuing

A mid-September update for its Route 322/Potters Mills Gap project in southeast Centre County. Up-to-date information can also be found on the PMG Project page at www.penndot.gov/pottersmillsgap.

Drivers can expect the following September 16-20:

  • Penn State hosts the Pitt Panthers Saturday, September 14, at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon. Drivers are encouraged to check roadway conditions by visiting www.511PA.com or www.penndot.gov/pottersmillsgap for up-to-date delays and/or restrictions.
  • Motorists are advised a new pattern for eastbound traffic is in place. Eastbound traffic now uses the new local access road (Route 2015) east of Potters Mills for one mile before using a crossover to return to existing Route 322. This new traffic pattern will be in place for the duration of the project.
  • Motorists are advised a new pattern for westbound traffic began last month. Westbound traffic no longer uses the crossover and is now routed onto the new local access road (Route 2015) east of the intersection of Routes 322 and 144. This new traffic pattern will be in place for the duration of the project.
  • There is a 12-foot width restriction on the western end of the project between Route 144 and Mountain Back Road. This restriction will be in effect until the fall of 2020.
  • There is a 14-foot width restriction on the eastern end of the project between Sand Mountain Road and Route 144. This restriction will be in effect until the fall of 2020.
  • Work will also continue off the roadway and drivers should be alert for construction vehicles entering and exiting Route 322 through the Potters Mills area. Flaggers in the roadway may be aiding construction vehicle movements. Do not follow construction equipment into the work area.

This is the third and final phase of a construction project dating back to 2015. Phase One of the project constructed the new bridge at Sand Mountain Road. Phase Two created the new local interchange on Route 322 at Sand Mountain Road. The goal of Phase Three is to reconstruct Route 322 from Sand Mountain Road to Potters Mills – including a new Route 322/Route 144 intersection. The completed project will alleviate congestion and allow traffic to move more safely and efficiently from the Centre/Mifflin County line to Potters Mills.

Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $82 million project.

Motorists are encouraged to “Know Before They Go” by checking conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 950 traffic cameras.
